Appearance:

Its dark reddish brown sapwood ranges toward dark red or orange-brown and is striped with randomly spaced blackish brown lines evocative of tiger stripes. Tigerwood shows full, rich color through the entire thickness of the wood, which helps to hide wear marks.

Properties:

Tigerwood is a highly durable wood with a high resistance to beetle attack. The wood remains dimensionally stable and is reported to have no odor. Tigerwood is time consuming to dry properly while preventing degrade. You must be careful with Tigerwood because if exposed to sunlight, it will change color. Do not be suprised if the floor in front of windows is a different color than the floor surrounding it.

Janka Hardness: 1850

As a flooring option, tigerwood is one of the harder and more durable woods. It falls between hickory or pecan and purpleheart in hardness, is nearly ninety-six percent as hard as merbau, is a little over twenty-seven percent harder than hard maple, and is about eighty-four percent as hard as santos mahogany's ranking of 2200.

Workability:

Tigerwood flooring is one of the easiest woods to polish in the world, but sanding requires some skill. You must be very careful when sanding because improper technique may result in permenant damage. Sawing is also a problem with Tigerwood. Most flooring experts recommend using carbide-tipped cutting tools in order save as much of the woods strength as possible. Tigerwood will hold nails very well, but pre-boring is highly recommended.

Uses:

Tigerwood's uses include flooring, boat building, fine furniture, paneling, plywood, and shutters.
